This Berry Acai Bowl is made with acai puree, fruits, and milk, blended together and topped blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and sliced bananas.

When I saw this posted everywhere, my initial reaction was, Here’s a new twist to smoothie. At that time, I thought it was another fad that would die down eventually. To my surprise, it gained popularity. Presently, even restaurants have begun serving it, and they are not cheap.

What is an acai bowl

An acai bowl is a Brazilian snack made of frozen mashed acai palm fruit. Acai palm fruit resembles a blackberry or grape. Acai berries grow on acai palm trees in the Amazon rainforest. When mashed, they form a dark purple paste. It is popular throughout Brazil and sold in kiosks along the beach and in juice bars. It is served as a smoothie in a glass or bowl and topped with different fruits or granola.

I finally got intrigued by the Instagram images I see that are bursting with colors. Beautiful and quite appetizing creations were popping up everywhere. What attracted me the most was the colorful combinations of fruits in a bowl. Just like a salad, if it is colorful, I don’t feel forced to eat it.

Acai powder or puree

Then one day I researched where I could get the acai purple powder or puree. Luckily, I found it at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I was expecting it to be expensive, but it was reasonable. So I finally dove in just like the others. I made my very own creamy and attractive Berry Acai Bowl. I’ve never had it before, and to my surprise, it was delicious.

It is so easy to make. Place all ingredients in the blender and blend well until smooth. I never added sugar; the banana added sweetness to the smoothie.

If you’ve never tried a thick and creamy smoothie in a bowl – it's time to make one. If you're feeling lazy, you can get one at a smoothie place nearby, but it will cost you more. Trust me, it's so easy to make and much cheaper if you do it yourself.

Where to get it

Acai fruits have a very short shelf life and are typically exported in the form of purees, powders, and juices. Trader Joe's sells the puree type, while Whole Foods sells the powder type. If neither of these stores are close to you, you can also purchase acai powder or puree from Amazon.
