Turmeric Tea

Turmeric tea is easily made by boiling water with turmeric root. It can be enjoyed hot or cold at any time of the day. It has a rich, distinct, and a slightly spicy soothing flavor.

What is a turmeric root

Turmeric root is a tuberous ginger-like plant that grows underground. When you peel a turmeric root, the interior is bright orange and can stain your hands so it's best to wear gloves when handling it.

When processed, it can turn into a bright yellow-orange spice used in cooking, such as curries and sauces. Another way to consume turmeric is by making turmeric tea. Both the spice and the tea has been used for thousands of years.

Variations

Elevate the taste of turmeric tea by adding lemon, honey, milk, orange juice, cinnamon or sweetner.

The taste can vary depending on how it's prepared and what other ingredient are added to the drink.

Where to buy turmeric

Turmeric root is available in most Asian stores and some grocery stores. If you have a hard time looking for it, you can try this ginger drink, which shares a similar flavor.

Tips

  • Wear gloves when handling turmeric as it can stain your hands.
  • For a less strong flavor, experiment with and adjust the amount of roots to boil with water.
  • Additionally, you can reuse the roots to make another batch of drinks.

How to Make Turmeric Tea

This turmeric tea is a refreshing and soothing drink made by boiling water with turmeric.

Ingredients

  • 4 thumb size turmeric washed and peeled
  • 4 to 5 cups water
US Customary - Metric

Instructions

  • Wash and peel turmeric root into matchstick sizes. (Be sure to wear gloves as it will stain your fingers.)
  • Boil water on the stove with turmeric root.
  • Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Turn off heat.
  • Transfer the drink to a pitcher using a strainer but don't discard the boiled turmeric root.
  • Serve hot or cold. Add honey, sugar, lemon, orange juice or milk, if desired.

Notes

  1. You can also add whole turmeric roots in the pot.
  2. Don’t discard the turmeric root after boiling, instead reuse it for another batch. Refrigerate recycled turmeric for up to 3 days.
  3. Remember to wear gloves when peeling turmeric as it will stain your hands.
  4. The tea can be refrigerated for up to 4 days.
